Works from the Diocese
The artworks brought from the Diocese are set along the Museum tour, in three sections that go from the ground floor to the second floor in chronological order, including some significant paintings and sculptures for the history of Lombard art from the fourteenth to the nineteenth century. All the works of art in this section come from various parishes in the Diocese of Milan, an area that covers the territories that currently correspond to the Provinces of Milan, Varese and Lecco, as well as part of the Province of Como. Here the visitor can see works by Anovelo da Imbonate, Michelino da Besozzo, Ambrogio da Fossano called “il Borgognone”, Marco d’Oggiono, Bernardino Campi, Carlo Francesco Nuvolone, Giulio Cesare Procaccini, Giuseppe Vermiglio, Stefano Maria Legnani called “il Legnanino”, Pietro Antonio Magatti, Alessandro Magnasco, to name but some of the major artists. The restoration and valorization of the artworks loaned by the parishes is an integral aspect of their correct preservation, and the Diocesan Museum has undertaken to store those works that are not tied to their place of origin by a specific historical-artistic context, or which are no longer the object of local worship.
