THE EXHIBITION SECTOR
The Arciconfraternita del SS. Sacramento
A large salon houses the cycle of paintings from the Arciconfraternita del Santissimo Sacramento, dedicated to the miracles performed by the Eucharist and to St Catherine, also patron saint of the Confraternity. The great canvases were commissioned in the late 1600s from the leading painters active in Milan, including Filippo Abbiati, Carlo Preda and “il Legnanino”, to be displayed during Corpus Domini, along the aisles of the Duomo, in Milan, which was the home of the actual Archconfraternity. The recovery of these precious works of art, at long last restored and made available to the public, after many decades of oblivion, guide the Museum visitor into the spirit of an ancient and popular form of devotion: in fact, the Confraternities played an important religious and social role in the Ambrosian Diocese..
