THE EXHIBITION SECTOR
Marcenaro Collection
The sculptures displayed in this section are on loan from Milan’s Fondazione Cariplo. This is the most significant part of the rich collection of ancient art left to the foundation in 1976 by Caterina Marcenaro, the art historian and a major player in the recovery and renovation of museums in Genoa, thanks to her role as Director of the city’s Municipal Office for Fine Arts. The sculptures on show cover a time-span of four centuries – from the 1200s to the 1600s – and are identifiable in various artistic contexts of Northern Europe, Liguria, Central Italy, with a preference for wooden sculptures. A small nucleus, now in storage and awaiting restoration, comprises paintings from the Marcenaro Collection.
