A. Crespi’s Fondi Oro
The refined Fondi Oro (gold backgrounds) collection, unique on the Milan museum horizon, epitomizes an important example of themed collecting. The pieces are a reflection of the refined spirit of Lombard collecting, always alert not only to local artistic production, but also to that of other realities. The 41 panels, made from the 1300s to the 1400s, mainly in Tuscany and in Umbria, symbolize crucial moments in the development of Italian painting, with specific reference to religious subjects. The main artists to feature here are the Florentine Bernardo Daddi, Gherardo Starnina, an emblematic figure of Late Gothic in Florence, and Sano di Pietro from Siena.
