THE EXHIBITION SECTOR
Monti Collection
In 1650, Cardinal Cesare Monti (1593-1650) left his collection of paintings and drawings to the archbishops who would succeed him in Milan. There were about 172 items that went on to constitute the bedrock of the Milan Archbishopric Collections. They were all left on display in the Archbishop’s Palace until 1811, when Andrea Appiani selected some to be moved to the Pinacoteca di Brera, the gallery where they are still kept. The Cardinal’s preferences, perfectly aligned with the culture of St Carlo Borromeo and the Counter-Reformation spirit, tended to the 1500s Veneto School and the early 1600s Lombard painters, as well as to the Leonardesque and Emilian schools. Some of the most outstanding works left in the Archbishop’s Palace, and then channelled into the Diocesan Museum, include Bernardino Lanino’s Salvator Mundi, the Fall of St Paul by Cerano, and Christ and the Adultress by Tintoretto.
